Smartphone Usage and Its Negative Impact.

On the 1st May 2023, VKT High was pleased to have an entrepreneur NANGMUANSANG LETHIL to give a talk on this relevant issue students are facing. The talk covers a brief historical evolution of information and smartphone, and stresses on the negative impacts of smartphone on the domains of student’s physical health, psychosocial development, academic performance, and healthy lifestyle. Based on surveys in Canada, UK, and South Korea, for instances, decrease in self-discipline, happiness, contentment, sleep deprivation, depression, and increase in self-injury are some of the harmful effects among active users of smartphone more than 2 hours daily. The talk also highlighted students who are non-active smartphone users “perform better,” able to retain and comprehend “more” compare to active users (Journal of Communication Education, 2013). Lethil stressed the importance of “cutting down of hours” and “judicious” use of mobile phones as mobile phones are here to stay.
